Pens & Pencils is a social-impact horror short about the school-to-prison pipeline. Gem wrote the film based on an incident between her brother and an administrator at his private school and drew on her years working with incarcerated youth, where she'd watched the same machinery turn children into cases firsthand. What came out is horror in the truest sense: the ordinary architecture of a school revealed as a structure built to consume the kids inside it.

Gem conceived, wrote, and financed the film, earning its production grant through the Black TV & Film Collective's Black Producer Fellowship, funded by Cinereach and Wavelength Productions, and led it creatively from script to screen.

HOPELESS

A woman in a rotting relationship finds herself trapped in a loop that resets every time she renews her lease with her boyfriend.

Hopeless is based on a short story concept by Gem, inspired by the unfortunate “relationship chicken” she played with an ex for more than two years.

Hopeless screened at UrbanWorld Film Festival, Roxbury International Film Festival, Baltimore International Black Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, Filmteenth Festival, Gary International Black Film Festival, Diamond State Black Film Festival, Twin Cities Black Film Festival, and Rocket City Short Film Festival.
